Garnet is suitable for hand sanding. It works well on logs – removes minor scratches and prepares the surface for finishing. Abrasive particles rupture during use, providing a new edge for material removal, but garnet aluminium oxide abrasive paper wears out quickly.
Emery is suitable for hand sanding and strong sanding of metals. Use coarser coarse sand to remove rust or paint and polish with finer coarse sand. Emery 220 grit aluminum oxide abrasive usually has a cloth backing, also known as emery cloth.
The abrasive cloth is similar to sanded abrasive paper or abrasive cloth but covered with very fine loose iron oxide particles, also known as jewelry rouge, rather than a layer of particles combined with abrasive. Suitable for final metal and gem finishing.
